Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati or IITG), an autonomous institute for education and research in science, engineering and technology located in Guwahati, in the state of Assam, India. It is the sixth member of the IIT fraternity. IIT Guwahati is one of the top technological institutes in India, primarily focused on research in engineering and science, and the teaching of undergraduates.

IITG is officially recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The institute consistently ranks amongst the top engineering colleges in the academic ranking of Indian colleges by various engineering education surveys like India Today, Dataquest etc.

The history of IIT Guwahati traces its roots to the 1985 Assam Accord signed between the AASU and the Govt. of India, which mentions the general improvement in education facilities in Assam and specifically the setting up of an IIT.

IITG was established in 1994 by an act of parliament and its academic programme commenced in 1995.[1]. IITG admitted its first batch of students into its Bachelor of Technology programme in 1995. The selection process was the same as that of all IITs, i.e. through the Joint Entrance Examination. In 1998, the first batch of students were accepted into the Master of Technology program through the GATE.

In the present day, IIT Guwahati functions completely in a state of the art and generously endowed campus both in infrastructure and natural beauty. The campus of IITG is situated on the northern banks of Brahmaputra and abuts the North Guwahati town of Amingaon. The IIT continues to develop and diversify each year, while maintaining its stated aim of improving standards in education and research. Owing to its establishment in the early 1990s, the institute boasts of providing the best and the latest engineering and computing resources in the entire country.

Currently IIT Guwahati houses the following departments :

The aforementioned departments of the Institute offer B. Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes. The strength of the institute like other IITs is its exceptional undergraduate (B. Tech) program which produces world class engineers who have both excelled in technology and leadership positions in India, and as researchers and entrepreneurs worldwide. A snapshot of IITG placement statistics may be seen at: http://www.iitg.ernet.in/placement.

IIT Guwahati was also the first IIT to introduce design as one of the disciplines at Undergraduate level. The Department of Design (DoD) at the institute awards the degree of B.Des. (Bachelor of Design) on completion of the undergraduate academic program.

Presently there are about 2100 students on rolls, 200 faculty members and 250 support staff.

Located in the land of “The Red River and Blue hills” IIT Guwahati possesses unarguably one of the most beautiful campus in India that attracts many visitors by its spell-binding picturesque surroundings.

Campus is situated on the northern banks of the mighty river Brahmaputra with Guwahati city on the opposite side of the river. Important buildings like the Academic complex, Administrative building, Central Library and Computer Center and the Student Activity Center has state of art facilities installed in them.

IIT Guwahati has rapidly assembled the necessary infrastructure for carrying out advanced scientific and engineering research and is equipped with state of the art technical equipment and aids.

Research continues to be a thrust at IITG as the Govt. Of India looks to the IITs to develop graduate programs that can replicate the success of the vastly successful undergraduate one. IITG is currently home to six Centres of Research.

  • Centre for Educational Technology
  • Centre for Nanotechnology
  • Centre for Mass Media Communication
  • Central Instruments Facility
  • Centre for Energy
  • Centre for the Environment

IIT Guwahati has the distinction among the IIT fraternity, of having accomplished this without assistance or collaboration from any foreign government.

IIT Guwahati Hostels

IIT Guwahati is a fully residential campus. All the students live in hostels located in the campus. All these hostels have spacious single seater rooms and have all basic amenities like food mess, canteen, lounges, campus wide LAN with internet access etc. The hostels are named after various rivers and tributries of north-east India. Presently, the hostels are:

  • Manas
  • Dihing
  • Kapili
  • Siang
  • Kameng
  • Barak
  • Subansiri
  • Umiam

Many other hostels in the plan are rapidly coming up as a part of the campus construction.

Every year two major national level festivals are organised by the students of IIT Guwahati. The science and technological festival, Techniche (see http://www.techniche.in/index.php), is held in the odd semester (beginning of September) while the cultural festival, Alcheringa, is held in the even semester (end of January). Alcheringa is the biggest cultural festival of its kind in the entire north-east India and draws crowds from all over India.

Apart from the two national level festivals, the students have an intra-IIT, inter-hostel cultural festival named Manthan (literally:churning), held every year in October. The annual sports meet Spirit is also organised each year and many colleges from the north-east India participate in this meet. Besides these, Inter-IIT Sports Meet is held annually every winter among the seven Indian Institutes of Technology. The Meet is hosted by any one of the IITs in turn. In the year 2006, IIT Guwahati has hosted the 42nd Inter-IIT Sports Meet for the first time in its history.
